Barbara Zecchi Named Interim Director of Translation Center

Barbara Zecchi, an Associate Professor who is currently Director of Spanish andzecchi 9-14 Portuguese in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, has been named Interim Director of the Translation Center.  Prof. Zecchi, a native Italian from Venice, born in London, is fluent in Spanish, Italian and English and specializes in film adaptation, digital humanities, and World Cinema. She is also the coordinator of the Catalan Lecturership funded by the Institut Ramon Llull, the cultural branch of the Catalan government. She brings great strengths to the Center.

Prof. Zecchi has authored, edited, or co-edited several books, including La pantalla sexuada (Cátedra, 2014), Desenfocadas: Cineastas españolas y discursos de género (Icaria, 2014), Gynocine (Univ. Zaragoza, 2013), and Teoría y práctica de la adaptación fílmica (ed. Complutense, 2012).

She has much experience in translation and interpreting, having worked as a freelance translator while in Spain.  Her master’s thesis was on: “La primera traducción de la Commedia dantesca atribuida a Don Enrique de Villena” [The first translation of the Dante's Commedia attributed to Don Enrique de Villena].  Enrique de Villena (1384?-1434) was a medieval Spanish poet, the first translator of Virgil and Dante into Spanish. She has also worked on film translation and adaptation. She is currently working on the early days of Hollywood  film productions translated into Spanish.

Prof. Zecchi follows Edwin Gentzler as Translation Center Director.  Gentzler had directed the Center for 20 years, and is currently on sabbatical for the 2014-15 academic year.
